Visit the Marathon Lake and uncover the history of the Battle of Marathon, the most important of the ancient years. Visit the unique Marathon lake with its marble dam. Have a private, half-day tour from Athens along with your personal licensed guide and not just a driver!
The beauty of having a private licensed guide is that any commentary is tailored to your interests. Only a licensed guide can escort you inside the museum and the archeological places. A driver will just take you to places, with no real information about the places you visit.
Driving through the Northern and Eastern part of Attica region you will witness a surprisingly rural setting. A countryside with groves, vineyards and other cultivations, woods and lakes. The view of the Euboean Sea and of course plenty of historic ancient sites. Some of them you will be able to explore with our “The Marathon Legacy” day tour.
We will pick-you-up at your place in Athens and drive to the Marathon Lake, some 40 km North of the Greek capital. Next to the impressive marble dam, and amidst lush pine greenery, is a cozy cafe-restaurant. Your first stop is Lake Marathon, of immense natural beauty. Made entirly with Pantelicon white marble, The Marathon Dam is the world’s only marble dam.You can have a coffee or a snack at the cafe (own expense). Have the chance to admire the scenery and take wonderful panoramic pics.
After the Marathon Lake, learn everything about the Battle of Marathon. Visit the Marathon Museum and see the findings originating from the Battle of Marathon and from the Egyptian temple built nearby. After that, visit the tomb of the Plateis who fought with the Athenians at the historic battle.
Visit at the third stop the Tomb of the Athenians. Above all, this is the burial mound which is the final resting place of 192 soldiers who died in the Battle of Marathon. Most importantly, learn all the story revolving around the epic battles against the Persian invaders and the Marathon battle. The quintessential struggle for liberty, independence and democracy. A major landmark in the history of Western Civilization. We will, of course, run in the footsteps of the first marathon runner, Pheidipiddes, the untamed messenger that conveyed the famous “Nenikikamen” to the Athenians.
Final stop lunch at a Greek tavern, with traditional delicacies.
- Witness the area where the epic battle between Greeks and Persians took place
- Learn about the history of the original Marathon
- Relax in the countryside sipping Greek coffee by Marathon Lake
